Warning: Dreamcutter is a very NSFW game!
Update: The developer has release a patch that has fixed Dreamcutter’s performance issues mentioned. I’m leaving the review untouched, however.
Dreamcutter is a 2d action platformer first and sexy game second. There is sex, there are unlockable pinups, but they’re not really the draw here. The draw is the great action platforming on offer. Its good, really good. And gets really tough later on. You play as Haley, a college student who falls asleep in Economics class and enters her subconscious mind where she must jump and fight through five worlds to escape. To help you, you have the titular Dreamcutter, a talking scythe. You slash, throw it into walls to jump higher, and spin in like a helicopter. The levels start easy and get harder, until world 4 when things get really hard.

Each world in Dreamcutter is divided into several levels. Each level is pretty long and divided up by checkpoint beds. Each level ends with fighting a nightmare sphere that spawns lots of enemies. At the end of each world is a boss… and a sexy scene! There are coins you collect which serve two purposes. First is to upgrade your health, damage and other things. The second is to unlock stage challenges that unlock those sexy pinups. A challenge might be destroy 5 skulls in a stage.

What ultimately drags Dreamcutter down from a Must Play to a Recommended, is the slowdown every time enemies clog the screen. Its noticeable and disappointing. Also disappointing is they don’t do enough with the theme. While the storytelling is good, the worlds are a forest, or mountain, or cave. The levels should reflect aspects of Haley’s lives and fears, but they largely don’t. Like, a world should be a trippy college campus. Still, that’s just nitpicking.

Dreamcutter is very good, only the performance issues really dragging it down. The game gets hard, but its a good kind of hard, the kind that makes you keep going. While there is sexy stuff, it could be cut out and very little would change. That is the best kind of naughty game, because it means its a good game at heart. I’ll give Dreamcutter a Recommended with an eight back-end score.
Overall: Dreamcutter is a very good and sexy action platformer only dragged by the occasional slowdown.
