Developed by Wandering Wonder, Published by Waku Waku Games, Puzzle Battler! Mirai is really, really good. I’ll be honest, I went in with rock bottom expectations. This seemed cheap and terrible, but hours later I was still hooked.

There is a story involving this girl Mirai who is “indebted” and must save five princesses. Its not important and delivered in Engrish. But where the game shines is the game play itself.

Puzzle Battler! Mirai
Boss battles be crazy

Puzzle Battler! Mirai is a puzzle battle game and a fairly standard one at that. Match 4 of the red, blue or green stones to attack and charge your skills. The hearts restore your health. The smile coins allow you to spend points on a training grid. The fairies give you exp to level up your skills.

You choose a level, easy, normal or hard, and face four waves of enemies. Every 5th level is a mini-boss.

Now the training grid:

The hearts are your health. The sword is your attack skill and the question boxes give you bonuses if you collect enough, like pre-charged skills, and exp and coin bonuses. The keys unlock the boss levels and the cherries unlock the challenge levels(one is get 10 combos in 2 minutes).

The skills are interesting, the attack skills vary in how they attack the enemies, as the upper part is not just for show. Different attacks will attack differently as every enemy has a separate health bar. There are also the usual healing, shield and stone change skills found in puzzle battle games.

Puzzle Battler! Mirai
Don’t worry, you keep your exp and coins when you lose.

Puzzle Battler! Mirai is not high art, but its fun and engrossing and there is more content than you’d think. The graphics are charming and the protagonist is even voiced. You could do far worse for $8 and therefore I give it a hearty recommend.

Overall: Puzzle Battler! Mirai is a fun puzzle game that will keep you playing.

Verdict: Must Play
