Desktop Golf

Who is my most decorated publisher, the one who gets the most Must Plays? It’s not exactly a big player you’ve heard of, it is small Japanese indie publisher Sat-Box. Their games can be hit and miss, but when they hit, they knock it out of the park. They’ve gotten three so far, and Desktop Golf will mark their forth. These games are not AAA masterpieces, but for what you get for the price, they’re stellar. Take Sushi Race, It doesn’t have the production values of Mario Kart, but otherwise is a great kart racer. Desktop Golf continues this trend with a delightful Golf game that won’t ask too much. Aim, use the power meter, and watch the ball fly. There’s a wrinkle in that you only get one club(a pen) so you need to adjust power accordingly.

Here is a video of Desktop Golf, two holes where I get chip in birdies:

The Heart of Desktop Golf

The video pretty much shows you everything game play wise in Desktop Golf. There’s not much to it, but there doesn’t have to be to be fun. This is not Easy Come Easy Golf. There are several courses with different themes, ranging from arts and crafts to a lava theme. A few are available to start, more are unlocked via points you earn by playing(or a mini-game once every three hours), You get five thousand points to start, which can unlock five more courses. However, there’s also a gacha game where you unlock new pen clubs, which have different stats that affect game play. There is stroke play, and match play against CPUs, which aren’t pushovers. There is also multiplayer with up to four people.

A very tricky hole.

Don’t let the video fool you though, the courses in Desktop Golf do get difficult and if you don’t shoot right, you’ll be getting triple bogies. The stuff on the playing field is sold, so you have to take the stuff into account when you shoot. And again, the AI is competent. There is plenty of golf to be had here, and the online leaderboards give you something to shoot for. There are also nice touches, like a male caddy if you choose(who makes the Nice Shot sounds), and every course has appropriate music. Finally, you can create your own holes if you want in a create mode. Overall, I give Desktop Golf a Must Play verdict with a nine back-end score.

Overall: Desktop Golf is a simple golf game with a lot of heart that is simply delightful to play. You’ll have fun with this.

Verdict: Must Play
