Shatter Remastered Deluxe is a Breakout clone with pizazz. While you still bounce a ball around a screen breaking blocks, there are a few neat twists. First you can launch multiple balls at once. You get three balls in a level and can launch all three. Every ball you have in play increases your score multiplier. Second, you can either suck balls and blocks towards you, or blow them away. Both have their uses, and blowing is no guarantee you won’t lose a ball. Third, you have a shard meter. Its used to shield yourself from blocks, or a block destroying barrage when full.

Shatter Remastered Deluxe Switch Review
You shield comes in handy here

The story mode in Shatter consists of 71 levels, divided into worlds. Each world has 6 blocks levels, a boss level and a bonus level. The bonus levels are simply keeping three balls in play for as long as possible as there are no blocks. In addition, there is an endless mode, a boss rush mode and a time attack mode. You can also play multiplayer.

This boss is called the Bloctopus.

When I think of Shatter, I think of Wizorb. I think that because both games push the Breakout Formula forward in new and different directions. And like Wizorb, the will get a Must Play, because if you’re a breakout fan, you really need to try this out. Its like Breakout on steroids!

Shatter Remastered Deluxe Switch Review
Shatter also has interesting level design.

Finally its worth noting Breakout clone Arkanoid – Eternal Battle released last week completely broken and way overpriced. Fortunately, Shatter Remastered Deluxe has come along this week and eclipsed it. We’re better off for it.

Overall: Shatter Remastered Deluxe is Breakout on steroids. It pushed the genre forward in a new, exciting direction.

Verdict: Must Play
