Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour is not an unknown game by an indie developer. It is the latest edition of a game that has been re-released over and over again for twenty years. But I needed a game to christen my new OLED switch(long story) so I got it. Besides it was only ten dollars. And I was not disappointed. This edition packs the original three campaigns, along with the Atomic Edition 4th campaign and a brand new one from the original developers. It doesn’t include all the original content, including Duke it out in DC, but really, I didn’t feel like I was missing anything. I’m not going to get into the nitty-gritty game play details, as its a classic FPS. You run around levels and shoot enemies, find keys and flip levers. Its not a modern game, but it still holds up wonderfully.
Instead, I’ll get into the bells and whistles of Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour. First thing, you’ll notice is that you have 2 view options, original 1996 and a modern 3D look. Honestly the modern look just looks odd as the levels are full 3D, but the enemies are 2D sprites. Fortunately, you have the original look to fall back on. Also present is a nifty rewind feature when you die. You can restart from any point previously in the level, which is cool. You can also start the game from any level you want. There is developer commentary. There are various multiplayer modes, where you can play with or against players via WiFi.
Honestly, I’ve played a lot of Duke Nukem 3D over the years, and this is the best edition I’ve played and a fine edition to the Switch. There is simply no reason to pass this up if you’re a Duke Nukem fan. It really is quite something to behold. Granted, some people slammed it because the game is dated. Yes, it is dated, its game straight out of 1996. But I doubt anyone would go into this expecting a modern Call of Duty campaign. Know what you are getting into if you’ve never played this game, and you’ll do just fine.
Overall: Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World tour is a great edition of Duke on the go. Can’t go wrong here, if you know what you’re getting.
