There is a game close to my heart, and it is called Wild Guns Reloaded. It is in my top 5 favorite games of all time. This is not a review of that game, this is a review of a game called Western Frontier. But both are similar in basic design, strangely enough. Here, you play a bounty hunter who takes progressively difficult bounties. You play a section where you shoot random bad guys, then fight a boss battle against the bounty target. You move left and right, shoot, and dodge, not unlike Wild Guns. But Western Frontier looks like an 8-Bit NES game and is pretty simple in design.
In between the levels of Western Frontier, you go to a base where you spend the money you collect on power-ups, leveling up your handgun, buying a bullet-proof vest, and even two other weapons. Then you go to the pause menu and pick the level you want to go to(each unlocks in sequence). Then you play it, beat it, and move onto the next level, six bounties in total. The levels and bosses do get more difficult, but if you die on a boss, you just restart at the boss. No need to replay the first section, which is quite nice.
Should you buy Western Frontier, or Wild Guns Reloaded? That’s a tough question. I mean yes, if you haven’t played Wild Guns Reloaded, go play it. Now, if you want to play this, go play it. It will take half-an-hour at most for most players, so be forewarned. Still, It’s not a bad use of $2.23. There are far worse games on the Switch than this, including the wild west abomination Guns and Spurs 2, and the publisher’s own Angel Symphony. This will get a Recommended verdict with a 7 back-end score(it is really, really short).
Overall: Western Frontier is a fun little bite-size shooter that doesn’t wear out its welcome.
Verdict: Recommended
