In celebration of Dungeon Antiqua being released on the Switch, I was sent it for review. It is a cross between Final Fantasy 1 and a dungeon crawler. In fact, it really is a Final Fantasy Dungeon Crawler. Your goal is find five pieces of ancient armor and then go deeper into the dungeon and… I don’t know because I never got there, but more on that in a bit. You make 5 characters, fighters, thieves, priests, mages and the like. Then you go through procedural generated floors looking for the armor(unlocked via a silver key). You also have random battles and random chests.
Dungeon Antiqua is honestly pretty standard stuff, very reminiscent of Final Fantasy 1 in how it plays generally. The only major difference is chests, where you use a thief to check for traps and disarm them. Also magic users only have a set number of spell casts before you have to go back to town to reset. In between dungeons, you go to a town where you buy stuff and resurrect the dead.
Dungeon Antiqua’s major issue
The problem comes when you get to level 4 and you need a gold key to continue. I searched every nook and cranny of floor three and four, and no gold key anywhere, not in chests, not on enemies, not a random npcs standing around. Google search was useless and from what I could find, I wasn’t the only one with this problem. The game was no help either, just telling you to go deeper into the dungeon. My play through of Dungeon Antiqua came to a grinding halt.
It sucks caused I liked Dungeon Antiqua up to that point and would’ve continued had I found the gold key. Despite the missing gold key, I’ll give Dungeon Antiqua a recommended with a seven score. This is a good dungeon crawler that I enjoyed. Also, I did buy and play some of the sequel, and I’ll review that at a later date.
Overall: Despite my game grinding to a halt due to a missing item, I did enjoy Dungeon Anitqua and thought it was good for what it was.
