This is a game where you play a girl who jumps and air dashes across screens grabbing strawberries and making it to the exit. It is hard but allows infinite restarts. You goal is to climb a mountain… Oh wait, wrong game. I was talking about Celeste, an indie darling from a few years ago, not Saomi, the game I am reviewing. In fact, the two games share such similarities, I went and redownloaded Celeste for comparison.

Saomi
Saomi wears its inspiration proudly!

Now, Saomi is a game where you play a girl who jumps and air dashes across screens grabbing gems and making it to the exit. It is hard but allows infinite restarts. You goal is too… well there isn’t really a story here. According to the description, you are searching for a very rare diamond. Since there are no story sequences, like there is in Celeste, it does not really matter.

Saomi
Saomi doesn’t have Celeste’s sense of style either.

Saomi plays well and gets hard later one. There are sixty levels in total. But my question is, why play Saomi if you can play Celeste, which has several hundred? I guess if you only had five dollars, you can’t go wrong here. But if you have more money, play Celeste, instead of the discount version.

This make the verdict hard to give. I can’t give it a YMMV, I liked Saomi for what it is, discount Celeste. But I can’t really give it a Recommended, because I tell people to play Celeste. So I’ll give it a Recommended*.

Overall: Saomi is discount Celeste.

Verdict: Recommended*
